Case Study: Solid Craft for Future Craftsmen – Hørning Floors at Håndværkskollegiet
In the old freight yards of Horsens stands Håndværkskollegiet – a student residence unlike any other. Designed to house young people training in the building trades, the project embodies a rare synergy between architecture, materiality, and purpose. And at the heart of it lies a floor built to inspire: solid oak planks from Hørning.
Designed by Danø and Cubo Architects, Håndværkskollegiet is more than just a place to live. It’s a living tribute to craftsmanship. From its exposed construction elements to carefully chosen materials, the building is a daily reminder of the skills its residents are working to master.
Oak Planks That Anchor the Vision
To match the building’s robust expression and ethical foundation, Hørning delivered solid oak planks that add warmth, structure, and depth to the interiors. The floors were chosen not only for their beauty but for their long-term durability, reflecting the values of traditional craft in a contemporary context.
These are floors that can withstand the pace of student life while maintaining their aesthetic quality over time. And for future carpenters, electricians, masons and plumbers, they offer a daily point of connection to the material world.
Award-Winning Sustainability
Håndværkskollegiet is not just architecturally ambitious - it’s also a DGNB Gold- and Diamond-certified building, recognised for its environmental and social sustainability. Every material, including the floor, had to meet strict criteria. Hørning’s solid oak planks, produced with care and backed by full documentation, contributed to this achievement.
A Fitting Home for the Next Generation
This project speaks to us on multiple levels: as a manufacturer committed to quality; as a Danish company proud of its craftsmanship heritage; and as a team of people who believe in building spaces that endure.
We’re honoured that our floors are part of the daily rhythm at Håndværkskollegiet. Because when a floor is made to last, it becomes more than a surface - it becomes part of the education.
